Today
was my first time at the UN Headquarters Vienna. After the security check, that
reminded me of airports, I was standing on exterritorial territory.
The
curious feeling of not „really“ being in Vienna intensified after entering the
big conference room. It was filled with countless tables and chairs. Signs with
the nations names print on them were sorted orderly on top of the tables,
alotting so the seats to the official representatives.
At
about 10.15 a.m. the NPT PrepCom 2012 was declared open by this year’s chairman
from Australia. After the opening there were speeches by the ambassadors of
different nations who took the floor and explained their concerns as well as
stressed the importance of the contract. Special mention was given to the
situation in the Middle East.
In
the afternoon the opening ceremony of the exhibition „Under the Mushroom Cloud“,
which is organized by the japanese NGO Gensuikyo, took place. The exhibition
addresses the atomic bomb droppings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Besides pictures
and a lot of information, survivors of the bombings are on site and answer
questions of the interested parties.
Completed
was my first day at the UN Headquarters with a presentation by and on the CTBTO
and their activities.
In
the end I look back on an eventful day, which brought many new experiences for
me. I look curiously at the next two weeks!
Tag 1
Für mich war es heute das erste Mal in der UNO City Wien. Nach einem Sicherheitscheck, der wie auf internationalen Flughäfen ablief, stand ich danach auf exterritorialem Territorium.
Das sonderbare Gefühl nicht „richtig“ in Wien zu sein verstärkte sich, als wir den großen Sitzungssaal betraten. Der Raum war mit unzähligen Reihen von Tischen und Stühlen gefüllt. Darauf waren ordentlich Schilder mit den jeweiligen Ländernamen gereiht, die so den jeweiligen Vertreter_innen ihren Platz zuwiesen.
Die NPT PrepCom 2012 wurde vom diesjährigen australischen Vorsitz gegen 10:15 offiziell eröffnet. Es folgten Redebeiträge diverser Nationen, die sich zu Wort meldeten und ihre Anliegen erläuterten, sowie die Wichtigkeit des Vertrages betonten. Besondere Erwähnung fand dabei die Lage im Mittleren Osten.
Am Nachmittag folgte die Eröffnung der Ausstellung „Under the Mushroom Cloud“, die von der japanischen NGO Gensuikyo organisiert wird und die zwei Atombombenabwürfe über Hiroshima und Nagasaki thematisiert. Neben Bildern samt vielen Informationen, sind auch Überlebende der verheerenden Abwürfe vor Ort, die sich den Fragen der Interessierten stellen.
Abgeschlossen wurde mein erster Tag an der UNO City mit einer Präsentation durch und über die CTBTO samt ihrer Tätigkeiten.
Am Ende blicke ich auf einen ereignisreichen Tag zurück, der für mich viele neue Erfahrungen mit sich brachte und mich neugierig auf die nächsten zwei Wochen blicken lässt!
